It's voltage that you need to be careful about, so don't use a 9-Volt power supply on a system that only needs 5 Volts. On amp rating, you can never have too much, as the console will only take what it needs from the power supply. Many require a "center negative" barrel, while others require a "center positive" barrel. Take care to always observe the polarity requirements for most consoles.
